Community Service
Texas Adopt a Highway is a new addition to the community service division as of Spring 06. Currently, we have had two highway clean-ups with 100% participation from the chapter.
Another new service opportunity for the Spring 07 semester is helping the Up 'Til Dawn effort. This is a letter writing event in which we will seek donations to benefit St. Jude's Research Hospital. Every member will be providing addresses for this effort.
We also participate in Arbor Day. This is an event that our chapter has participated in since our return to campus in 2004. Our assigned area was near the Engineering Key. Around 20 of our members participated in the planting.
Another revolving service is Habitat for Humanity. Within the project we have contributed efforts to build one house. In Spring 07 we plan on completing another house. There has been 100% chapter involvement in this project.
American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and the U-Can Share Food Drive are also events that we have participated in since our return to campus. Both of these events have a strong participation rate from the chapter.
During the Spring 06 semester we had two special events. The first was a Red Cross meal serving to remaining Hurricane Katrina victims in Lubbock. Riversmith's provided meals for the victims and we provided the men to distribute the food. We were featured on local and the CNN national news. The second event was constructing a play area at the Texas Tech Human Sciences building. Various members participated in building every week, and by the end of the semester the play area was completed.
Our largest community service project coincides with our philanthropy. Delta Chi recently announced a national philanthropy to benefit the Jimmy V Foundation. The Jimmy V Foundation is a research foundation named in honor of Jimmy Valvano who coached college basketball, and died of cancer. We will be holding an event this spring for the first time with sororities participating in a game called Earth Ball. We have already acquired local business sponsors to add to the proceeds donated to this research foundation.
Community Service has always been an important issue with the Texas Tech Chapter of Delta Chi, we find service opportunities that can get the whole chapter involved. Service events give us the chance to show what a group of Fraternity men can do to help others, and give us the chance for brotherhood during the events. Our achievement in community service can be seen in recent awards we have received such as Outstanding Community Service at our national and regional conferences, as well as a local United Way nominee for outstanding local community service. Not only do we lend a helping hand in our local community and campus in events such as the U-Can Share Food Drive, Arbor Day and Habitat for Humanity, we also help to benefit national organizations such as the American Cancer Society and the Jimmy V Foundation
